When it comes to enhancing the face, much attention is put on the eyes, nose and mouth, but many do not realize the subtle but important improvement the chin brings to the overall beauty of the face. At Hanemann Plastic Surgery, our chin surgery creates a more aesthetically pleasing chin while also maintaining facial symmetry.
Hanemann Plastic Surgery serves the Baton Rouge area in Louisiana with both surgical and nonsurgical procedures for the face, breast, body and skin. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Hanemann.
What is Chin Surgery?
When a chin is too prominent in comparison to the rest of the facial features or not prominent enough, chin surgery – or mentoplasty – at Hanemann Plastic Surgery can help. As part of a facial reconstruction, performed in conjunction with other facial enhancement procedures or performed on its own, chin surgery restores balance to your profile.
Depending on your individual condition, Dr. Hanemann will take one of two approaches to chin surgery:
- Chin implants made of natural-feeling synthetic material can be used to augment a chin that is not prominent enough. Implants are available in all shapes and sizes.
- Reduction of the chin bone is performed for chins that are too large in comparison to the rest of your facial features
Incisions are generally made either under the chin or inside of the mouth in both cases for minimized scarring.
A modified chin can change the perceived appearance of other features such as the nose, and chin surgery is often performed together with nose reshaping to provide even more balance in the face.
Am I a Good Candidate for Chin Surgery?
Individuals who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their chins or overall facial symmetry may be candidates for chin surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Hanemann will evaluate your general health, medical history, cosmetic goals and facial structure, and help you determine which facial enhancement options are right for you.
What is Recovery Like?
Some tenderness will be experienced after surgery, and a small bandage may be applied for a few days to protect your new chin contours. Any residual discomfort can be easily controlled with medication prescribed to you by Dr. Hanemann, and you may need to adopt a soft food and liquid diet until the soreness subsides.
After about six weeks, all post-surgical swelling and bruising should be gone and your improved chin should be fully visible. Doctor Hanemann will advise you when to return to work and normal activities.
